We’re not angry because we’re offended
We’re not angry because we’re offended. We’re angry because we’re afraid.
Anger is a purposeful yet misunderstood emotion. It feels powerful, like a force pushing outward. But beneath that facade is the real driver: fear.
Think about the last time you got truly angry. Was it because someone disrespected you? Ignored you? Criticized you?
Look deeper—what fear did that trigger? Fear of rejection? Fear of failure? Fear of losing control?
And as long as we’re being honest, you can’t “feel” disrespected. Disrespect is not an emotion. It’s an interpretation, a story.
Anger is a mask, hiding the loss of control that fear brings. Instead of admitting we feel powerless, anger steps in to make us feel strong again.
But if we don’t recognize this pattern, we’ll continue to react unconsciously instead of responding with intent.
Ask yourself What am I really afraid of? and you’re taking the first step to choosing behaviors that get your real needs met.
