The spotlight effect

Self-consciousness and fear in a conversation happen when we focus on ourselves.

Psychologists call it the Spotlight Effect, where we believe are judging us – for status, appearance, how we talk or laugh…anything – when in fact we are really just magnifying the significance we have in the minds of others.

In other words, other people have their own stuff going on, just like you, and they are probably thinking a lot of the same things you are…about themselves!

The Spotlight Effect diminishes our ability to connect in genuine ways.

If you’re feeling self-conscious or shy, just ask an engaging question designed to connect over something you have in common.

We all have something in common.
