What to say when you’re overwhelmed

These days -- any days really -- it’s super easy to feel overwhelmed. What can you say to help the situation?

To yourself, you can say: "What's a different way of looking at this situation?”

And to others, you can simply say, “I’m feeling overwhelmed. Can we take a break?”

If presented sincerely, people will often recognize your need for space and help you get that need met. Just make sure you make it about you and are clear that you want to return to the conversation.

According to Linda Esposito, a psychotherapist who specializes in stress management, “Getting out of habitual patterns of overreacting to stress and uncertainty is a key step toward regarding yourself as a capable problem solver.”

BTW, Dr. Esposito also says a great thing to do to regain calm is to go drink a glass of water.

Stay hydrated.
