Fun DiSC activities for icebreakers
Here are some of the activities we use in our workshops to help teams better understand each others’ communication styles. They are based on the four communication styles, using DiSC.
Compliment Face Off
Break into groups by DiSC styles, each group is assigned another group/style to complement. The groups each make lists of the positive traits of the style/people in their assigned group. Then, they share their top 5 compliments. A panel of judges scores the compliments like in the Olympics. The team that gave the best compliments wins a prize.
Colonize Mars
It is the same as above, but instead of compliments, the scenario is that they're going on an interstellar journey and have to describe the qualities of the people in their assigned group that will make them great mission companions on their expedition to colonize Mars.
This or That, Lightning Round
Sit in a circle according to your placement on the DiSC Map, or sit in pairs facing each other, and share a "this or that" scenario, such as "Would you prefer to launch a new project or join an existing project that’s found a lot of success?" or "Do you prefer to plan things out carefully or improvise?" or "Would you rather defend your position on the correct way to do something or generate buy-in from your teammates for a new idea?"
Discuss your preferences, how choices parallel communication and work styles, how preferences connect to workplace priorities, etc. Repeat.
The Oxymoron Challenge
Break into groups. Each group comes up with as many oxymorons as possible, such as: acting naturally, government organization, exact estimate, working vacation, shabby chic or clearly misunderstood. After the time is up, each group presents their list. A panel of judges rates awards prizes for the longest list, most creative, and funniest. After, discuss strategic approaches & communication successes/challenges from each style.
Alphabet Scour
Break into groups. Teams search their surroundings, backpacks, pocketbooks, etc for items that start with each letter of the alphabet. After, discuss strategic approaches & communication successes/challenges from each style.
If you try any of these, let me know how they go.
