IDS it

Yesterday’s 2-Minute Tip discussed the importance of having a decider. Here’s a process from Gino Wickman’s Traction, you can use in your meetings to get to faster decisions.

It’s called IDS, for Identity, Discuss, Solve.

Around our company, you’ll often hear someone say, “Put it on the issues list,” or “Let’s IDS it.”

Wickman defines IDS as “a discipline that helps leaders permanently resolve Issues” and it’s a simple 3-step process:

First, identify the real issue. Dig in and determine its root cause. Do this before you try to discuss solutions. Everyone should say what needs to be said.

Next, the group discusses possible solutions. Everyone gets to make each point just once. Any more than that is politicking.

Finally, you solve the problem by agreeing on a plan of action that will make the issue go away forever.
If you can’t agree, that’s ok, just make sure you have a decider.
