3 Ways to respond to criticism
This week, the 2 Minute Tip discussed ways to respond to criticism, including acknowledging clouding and probing. Let’s look at a few examples of each.
“If you continue driving like a madman, you’re going to get in an accident!”
Acknowledging: I guess I’m being a little reckless.
Clouding: It’s true, I’m in a hurry.
Probing: What is it about my driving that bothers you?
“You spend a lot of time with your plants, but nothing else gets your attention around here.”
Acknowledging: I have let a lot of things slide to pursue my hobby. I’ll work on that.
Clouding: It’s true, some things don’t get my attention when I’m gardening.
Probing: What would you prefer I spend my time on?
“You never get involved. One harsh word and you’re gone.”
Acknowledging: You’re right. I don’t get deeply involved with anyone.
Clouding: It’s true. I’m a confrontation avoider.
Probing: What bothers you about my not getting involved?
Now your turn. What’s an example of each technique in response to: “Your public speaking skills are pretty bad.”
