When you win an argument, you still lose

What happens when you win an argument?

Feels good, doesn’t it, when you prove yourself right and them wrong?

Think deeper.

You’ve defeated a co-worker, now you have to work with a defeated person.

How will that change the relationship?

Some people win simply because they’ve got power over the other person. Sometimes, they’re just a better arguer.

What if instead of dominating someone with your verbal acumen, recitation of facts, and tone of voice, you instead helped the other person articulate their own argument?

Maybe they have something to say but don’t have the words or confidence to say it.

You might learn something. You might build collaboration and loyalty.

Please don’t equate silence with acceptance, power with influence, or listening with acquiescence.
