What to think before you speak

Whenever anyone comes to me for advice on what to say in any situation, I always ask them the same three things. I want them, and you, to be intentional about every word that comes out of your mouth.

It doesn’t matter if it’s a big all-staff presentation or a social post. Think before you speak. Pause and ask yourself three simple questions:

  • What is my goal? What do I want the other person/audience to do or think?

  • Who is my audience? Who am I speaking to, and what do they care about?

  • What is my message? What’s my central message?

Do this every time you open your mouth, and your body language will align with your words, you’ll know what to say, how to frame it, and when to listen.

You’ll be a more confident communicator.
