What are your non-negotiables?

I’ve said it before on the 2 Minute Tip: You get what you tolerate.

If you don’t set a boundary, people will continue to treat you as they want, not as you want.

Inherent in today’s organizational structures, there are power imbalances, but the one power even your boss’s boss’s boss can’t take from you is your personal power.

To me, your personal power comes from being intentional about how you react, even in difficult conversations.

If you have personal power, you can set a boundary about how you’ll be treated.

All communication starts with self-awareness. So…What are your non-negotiables about how you’ll be treated by others, no matter how much power they have over you?

Here are some general ones to consider:

  • Mutual objectives

  • Mutual respect

  • Mutual support

  • Honesty

  • Accepting differences

  • Open-mindedness

Here are some more specific, personal examples:

  • Acknowledging all emails sent to you directly

  • Giving your full attention in meetings

  • Addressing problems privately

  • Giving weekly status updates on projects without being prompted
