Want to have a rational conversation?
We often make the mistake that we have to be honest in the moment.
If someone is emotional and worked up, it takes a master communicator to stay grounded and to monitor both yourself and the other person for signs that one of you is going to silence or violence. I admit I’m still working at this.
Sometimes they’re emotional and we’re rational.
Sometimes they’re rational and we’re emotional.
It’s really, really hard to mix the two.
Sometimes, you may need to meet the emotional with emotion. Not to amp everything up, but to share the frustration that you’re just not connecting at that moment.
It may be easier to simply delay your honesty, to a time when you both can be more rational.
Just don’t wait too long. Unspoken criticism explodes like a dirty bomb.
