Unsolicited advice is rarely taken
Unsolicited advice is rarely taken.
People aren’t always looking for advice. Sometimes they just want to vent, someone to listen to, or just to feel heard.
You’ll know when they want advice when they ask (directly or indirectly).
Listen for permission before offering your input.
“I need your perspective.”
“What do you think?”
“I just don’t know what to do.”
Then validate that they want advice.
“Can I tell you what I think?”
“You want to know what I would do?”
Just as you would till a garden before planting a seed if you want it to grow, prepare them to receive your sage advice.
