Repeat yourself
You’re in a meeting. Laptops are open. Notepads are out. People are writing down everything that’s being said, but who is actually listening?
You're talking to your project team on Zoom. Are they paying attention? Are they even wearing pants?
Your kids are on their phones, texting, scrolling, posting. Did what you say even register?
According to Dr. Matthew McKay, people only absorb about a third of what you say, so it’s effective to repeat important messages at least three times.
While repeating yourself in emails, essays, or other written forms sounds odd, in verbal communications, it’s actually pretty common.
Here ares a few ways to repeat yourself to ensure your message is heard:
Verbatim repetition
Paraphrase key points
Say it in another way
Repeat your main idea in a slightly different pattern or terms
Use short summaries in the middle of speaking, as you move on to the next point
By reminding your listener what you’re saying, you’re giving them a chance to slow down and catch up.
