Manage up to a social boss
This week, the 2 Minute Tip is covering four different approaches to managing up to four different types of bosses. Yesterday, we discussed techniques to influence a dominant boss, today, let’s look at the social boss.
In the language of the DiSC® Personality Assessment, bosses with the “i” or Influencer Style, tend to be people-focused and optimistic. You can spot them because of their strong need to interact with others. They’re talkative and may have difficulty listening. They bring a positive sense of humor but may be disorganized. They’re the most consistently optimistic and enthusiastic people you know.
Do’s when managing up to a social boss
Start with relaxing and socializing.
Couch things in terms of relationships, and how the decision will impact people.
Use the language of teamwork, collaboration, and networking.
Demonstrate that things can get moving right away.
Provide testimonials from people they see as important or prominent.
Be energetic and optimistic, and expect spontaneity.
Don’t’s when managing up to a social boss
Do not be impersonal or task oriented. Start with the bigger picture.
Do not leave decisions undecided. Put the details in writing after you meet.
Don’t show discouragement. Remain optimistic and open to collaboration.
Listen and let them talk but do not get lost in conversation.
My wife is an i Style, and last week, she asked me to make backup travel arrangements for our son, who was stuck in the very short-staffed Toronto airport. I did my research and started explaining to her all the planes, trains, and automobiles he would have to take to get back to Baltimore. But she cut me off and said, “Stop! All these details are stressing me out! Just let me know if you’ve got it figured out. I don’t want to know the details.”
Tomorrow, we will discuss managing up to the “S” or Steadiness Style, the more gentile boss.
