I need you to

I was just at my kid’s school and overheard a teacher say to a student, “I need you to be quiet.”

What do you mean, you need me to…?

This isn’t a need. Needs are fundamental to human life. They’re a necessity. Here’s a basic list.  When we don’t have a good vocabulary of feelings and needs, we are less likely to be able to express them in ways that connect us to others and get our needs met.

This language disconnects people from one another. It’s the language of power and control.

It’s not how I want the next generation to communicate.  

Besides that, it’s officious, and you’re not yourself when you’re officious.
