Use definitive, specific, concrete language
The classic Elements of Style reminds writers to “prefer the specific to the general, the definite to the vague, the concrete to the abstract.” Good advice when speaking as well.
Which has more power?
“A period of unfavorable weather set in.” Or... “It rained every day for a week.”
“He showed satisfaction as he took possession of his well-earned reward.” Or... “He grinned as he pocketed the coin.”
Never lose hold of the concrete, even when dealing with general principles. Always be ready to deliver examples, particulars, and stories.
