Use assertive language

Assertive language gives the other person information about your experience.

  • Your view of the situation

  • How you feel about the situation

  • What you want to achieve from the outcome

  • Ideas for resolving the conflict

In conflict situations, “I” statements generally work better than “you” statements.

“I” statements tell the other person where you’re coming from, whereas “you” statements generally make some claim (usually negative) about the other person.

Which do you think will put the other person on the defensive?
