The Daily Tip is back!
Hello Friends,
I took a break from writing because my father was sick and my family needed my full attention, but let me tell you…It is good to be back!
While I will be sharing some of what I learned from the many difficult conversations I had these past few months, I want to share the one overarching communication lesson I took away from this difficult experience.
It’s that you’re a human with human needs, and there’s really only one way to get those needs met.
And that’s to express what you feel and ask for what you need.
If you need help, no one will know if you don’t say so.
If you need some direction or support. If you need to take a day off, or not spend the money. If you need space.
You have a responsibility to say so.
That responsibility is to others and to yourself. It’s not selfish to fulfill your own needs. No one else will, and you can’t be there for others if you’re depleted, empty, or unfulfilled.
So, to bring back the Daily Tip, I’d like to again share the Confident Communicator Formula for asking for what you need.
It’s at the core of all our training, and if you master it, I guarantee it will make your life better.
The next time you need something important, try out this sentence:
When you ______, I feel _______, because I need ______. Would you please _____?
You know how flight attendants tell you to put on your own oxygen mask first, before assisting others? This sentence is your oxygen mask. Try it on.
Thank you to everyone who reached out and comforted me these past few months. I appreciate all the love and support.
Let’s do this.
Danny
