Talking Gen X

This week, the 2 Minute Tip is covering generational communication differences. Unlike Baby Boomers, Gen Xers often prefer a casual work environment where there’s a strong sense of teamwork. They tend to view all team members as equally important.

So when you’re communicating with a Gen Xer, emphasize camaraderie and esteem. Generally, they prefer quick and informal feedback, rather than a huge sit-down – especially when feedback is tied to income and advancement (IMO, a terrible approach, for anyone).

Gen Xers are weary of jargon, or corporate speak. They see through statements like, “I want to empower you to...”  You may be perfectly well-meaning, but to them, it can be heard as condescending and formal.

Gen Xers stay with an organization longer than younger generations, so if you value and support them, give them personal growth opportunities through honest feedback. Just don’t make it a big deal.
