3 phrases for when they disagree with the decision

We’ve all been on teams where someone says some version of, “That’s the stupidest idea I’ve ever heard,” then 6 months later when the project flops, they say, “I told you so!”

Well, maybe if they helped support the decision (even if they disagreed) there would have been a different outcome.

In my 5 Behaviors of a Cohesive Team workshop, we discuss ways to get a teammate’s buy-in if they disagree with the decision by focusing on the human need of contribution and to be understood – with a phrase like, “I hear what you’re saying, but here’s why we decided to go in this direction.”

Here are three other phrases you can use when someone isn’t onboard with a team’s or organization’s strategy, from Stephanie Gnau:

  1. I understand you have reservations about…and I appreciate your honesty. I’m here to support you if there are challenges.

  2. Your expertise and dedication are essential to the success of this strategy. I believe your contribution will make a significant difference.

  3. Let’s keep an open line of communication. If you encounter any issues or have ideas for improvement, I want to hear them.

High expectations. High support.
